Immram is a setting, for chamber ensemble, reciter and singer, of the Immram suite of poems written by Nuala Ní Dhomhnaill and first published in her collection Feis (1991). In 2019 Neil Ó Loclainn was commissioned by Paddy Bushe and the Amergin Solstice Poetry Gathering to set the poems to music and the resulting suite of music was premiered at the festival in Waterville, Kerry in 2021.
The group have also featured at Martin Hayes’ Masters of Tradition festival, Bantry and Féile an Bealtaine, An Daingean. ‘Immram’ roughly translates as ‘Voyage’ and is a type of story found commonly in mythological Irish writing describing a protagonist’s journey by sea to the otherworld and adventures during their voyage. This suite of music combines influences from the sean nós tradition, jazz/improvised music and contemporary chamber music to create an innovative style of contemporary Irish music rooted in the singing and dance music tradition of Ireland. The musicians are some of the most highly regarded musicians working today in a variety of genres.
Neil Ó Loclainn has an instinct and a feel for different strands of music that allows him to create uncompromised musical worlds that speak with real depth and authenticity
