Going to the Islands – an exhibition of original paintings by Petronelle Clifton Brown

‘Is it being an Islander, as opposed to a person from a large continental mass, that results in a different perspective on the world? There are thousands and thousands of islands, some large like Ireland or New Zealand, others themselves islands off the shores of larger ones, and some little more than an inconspicuous dot on a map.

Over 50 years of my travels I have drawn many islands, large and small, in my battered notebooks. I have sketched unfamiliar scenery and above all observed the everyday life of Island inhabitants. Much of my work now reflects ways of life that has disappeared and even landscapes transformed by human activity or climate change.’
